Corten Steel — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Weathering steel with a characteristic rust patina.
Corten steel (also weathering steel) is an alloyed structural steel that forms a protective, rust-brown patina on its surface. This oxide layer prevents further corrosion and makes the steel extremely weather-resistant — without any additional coating. In stair construction, Corten steel is used primarily for outdoor stairs and as a design element, as the warm rust colour creates an attractive contrast with timber, concrete or glass.
