Folded-Plate Staircase on a Central Beam — Glossary entry
Category: Glossary entry
Folded-plate staircase supported by a central beam beneath the steps.
The folded-plate staircase on a central beam combines the folded appearance of a folded-plate staircase with the structural effectiveness of a central beam. Treads and risers form the characteristic origami-like folded path, supported by a central timber or steel beam running beneath the centre of the flight. Stringers are either omitted entirely or reduced to a slim decorative edge. This gives the staircase an especially light and sculptural presence, making it well suited to open living areas where it acts as a design element within the room.
