Steep Staircase — Layout variation
Category: Layout variation
Particularly steep staircase with minimal footprint, often as a secondary stair.
The steep staircase is a particularly steep construction with pitch angles well above the usual range and a narrow flight width of less than 80 cm. Its footprint is about 70 % of that of a standard staircase, making it ideal for attics, spare rooms or retrofitted galleries. Because of its steep pitch, it is not permitted as the sole access to a living space. To improve safety, handrails are often fitted on both sides. Well-known special forms include the alternating-tread steep stair (“paddle stair”), also known as samba stair.
